As we discussed in class, the Greek philosopher Socrates is famous for his statement, "The unexamined life is not worth living." Why might this statement be important to the history of philosophy? Why might this statement be important for your own life?

Hi adam....
This statement is important to philosophy becasue thats basically what its about. Its the study of human life and or your life. If you never took a momment out of your life to examine whats going on, i would think you would be dull and confussed. I think alot of people use philosophy in there everyday lifes they just dont relize it.
This statement is important to the history of philosophy because it basically tells why philosophers lik Socrates do what they do. Socrates is trying to say that every man should try to think and be educated and learn about the things around them or their life is wasted. This applies to me in my own life, because there are a lot of things in this world that I am curious about, and it would be foolish to go my entire life without trying to figure any of it out.
...YEY GOod Morning!!
I think this statement might be important to the history of philosophy because it was from one of the first great philosophers, and its pretty much what philosophy is about, the study life. This would be important to my own life because I think its true, if I went through my whole life unnoticed and without and any friends my life would be a waste, and it wouldnt be worth living.
This might be important to the history of philosophy because I think what he is trying to say is that when one doesn't look at one's life, its not anything. Philosophy is based on examining matters of existence, life, truth the mind etc. So with an unexamined life we would have no philosophy. This could be important for my own life in the way that i could take this saying and use it just as it is, and use his advice and examine my own life and figure things out and look deep into it so i can come to a conclusion on why im here and it will be worth living.
The statement is important because if your living your life and just doing things you think you should be doing its not like you are really living. If you don't examine what you are doing then it really isn't worth doing. You should know what you are doing and living for and why.
this statement is important to the history of philosophy because philosophy is about examining life, and why things happen. so philsophically it means a life without philosophy is not worth living. i think the statements important to my life because if i dont think about why i do things or believe in things then why would i do them or believe in them?
This statement is important to philosophy because if you only saw the simple there would be nothing to look at. Philosophy is all about seeing through the stuff that most people would only examine on the surface. That is why i think this statement is so important to philosophy.
Anyone can use this knowledge and compute it into thier everday life. An example may be something like with friendship. Some people, of course, act differently around certain poeple but it is not hard to see through the lies and the two face if you know how to see poeple for who they really are.
Philosophy is important in life because some people live life with no meaning and when it comes to that point of life then they usually just throw everything off..life should be important to people in every single way, life should have a meaning and people need to find that meaning..
this statement might be important to the history of philosphy because it was one of the first quotes about examining life and it really gives insight to what philosphy is all about, it might be important to my own life because i usually never think about things before i do them
Philosophy is an investigation of truths and principals in life. It is the process of examining different aspects of life on earth. The unexamined life would feel pointless, but a search for meaning behind things would give a sense of purpose therefore improving ones outlook on life.
This statement is important to philosophy because you should live your life the way you want to. If you think you doing the right thing in your life right now then do it. If you doing something you not interested in then it’s not worth living for. Just live you life to the fullest do what you think your life is worth for.
I think it is important to the the history of philosophy because not only did Socrates, who pretty much came up with the idea of philosophy, said it. But also because it says that if you dont look back on your life and learn from your mistakes theres no point in living your life because you'll end up making the same mistakes over again. This quote is impotant to my life because I would rather learn from my mistakes from the past and make my future better then keep makin the same mistakes over and over again by not examining my life and seeing how it has changed because of the way i look back and think, "okay lets not do that one again."
This statement is important to philosophy beacuse it states what philosophy is all about. If you lived your every day life without examining it and realizing what is going on then you would be confused.
its important to philosophy because it sets the grounds for philosophy. I dont think its important in my life because I think ignorance is bliss.
This statement is important to philosophy because isn't that what its about? Examining life for what its worth. People examine themselves everyday without even realizing it. Everytime someone stops to ask questions about the life they're living or how it got to be that way, thats philosophy. This statement may be important to my life becuase everyday I learn something, everyday I examine my life. So maybe my life is worth living.
God Adam its too early to think. Good morning to you too.
The unexamined life is not worth living, basically means that if you don't stop and observe life, then you'll never live life like you could. This statement is important to philosophy because philosophy is all about examining and analyzing life. Living an Unexamined life could result in making the wrong choices, affiliating yourself with the wrong people, and living your life the way it wasn't meant to be lived.
It's important in your own life because it really makes you think about your life. It makes you wonder if your paying enough attention to the things that constantly surround you in your daily life. Whether or not it makes a difference of how much you observe your life, doesn't matter. Many people live life without actually taking a look around and that's exactly the opposite life that socrates is talking about striving for.
this quote is important to philosophy because when socrates fathered philosophy it was to question you existance other than being born into you carrer or love. i think it started the real chain of free will among humans...
This statement by socrates is important to the history of philosphy because it is basically the study of life and if you dont stop to examine it and learn things that are unknown you will never get any thing out of life...
The quote is important because it is saying you need to study and know about what you will deal with in life in order to enjoy it. As far as the quote applies to me I want to learn as much as possible and know everything, so the quote says it is smart to do so.
This statement means that if you do not critque your own life or life in general, it is not worth living. Because if you are not doing this there cannot be enjoyment, there cannot be individuality, or life as some would say. Also if you did not learn from your past it is bound to repeat itself, so if you dont look back and learn from mistakes it will create a circle of the same mistakes over and over again.
Ignorance is not bliss. Socrates would rather die than give up philosophy, (the court seemed to have no problem with this.) possibly as to give an example to future philosophers. Often people are faced with the choice between convenient conventionalities and their beliefs and ideas in truth and reason. Maybe not as far as the choice between philosophy and death that Socrates was faced with, but the choice effects weather we deserve to call ourselves philosophical. Socrates example of dedication to philosophy set the stepping stones for the future generations of philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Aristophanes. Teaching them not compromise their hunger for knowledge and wisdom out of fear of the church and social standards.
i think the statment is important because you should be able to be a free person no matter where you are. if you think you are doing the right thing then no one should tell you how you should live your life and what way you should live it. if there is something you love to do then do it
